Love Is A Four Letter Word

Jason Mraz’s new album “Love is a Four Letter Word” was released this morning!

It is art.

I smile when I bop along to his uplifting backbeats in “Living in the Moment” and “Everything is Sound.” My heart feels the pang of past lovers with songs like “I Won’t Give Up” and “In Your Hands.” And I think of my sis when I hear “93 Million Miles” and my sweet sweet best friends when “You Fckn Did It” comes on. (I think we need to create a secret handshake for saving the Earth… just sayin.)

This album is like sex for my iPod. The kind that leaves it breathless, sweaty, and craving round two.
Make some love to your earbuds today and grab this album.

Partying with lululemon, in London!

It’s official. The first lululemon athletica shop in Europe is now open.

This past weekend was the lululemon athletica Chelsea‘s grand opening weekend. And boy was it grand! I flew in for the day to give out some high fives and provide some support for the team over there. They had it dialed in.

The buzz in the showroom was magnetic. People came in smiling. There were surprises, yoga poses, dance parties, a ton of laughs, sweaty pursuit recommendations, and really great conversations with everyone that came in. It was a hub of awesome. I flew off before enjoying the complimentary yoga class. However, I know I’ll be back again for a free Sunday class with these rock stars soon.

To give you a taste of what it was like, I grabbed some footage on my iPhone. They have even more pictures of the space, their ambassadors, and their classes on the lululemon athletica Chelsea Facebook page so be sure to check it out.

Welcome to Europe lululemon! And so it begins.

This is the Next Cool Thing

The next job.
The next relationship.
The next week.
The next post.
The next trip.
The next class.
The next year.
The next race.
The next goal.

When are we looking for the next cool thing instead of looking for what is cool about this thing?

Right now. THIS is cool.

Being Clear vs. Being Open

Feeling a little lost, or confused, in life can be crippling.
I don’t know what I should be doing for work.
I don’t know how I’m going to meet my dream partner.
I feel like I have these big dreams and goals … and they’re just not happening.

These thoughts can stop us from taking action, from figuring out a simple next step and doing that.

Clarity is royalty in my world. Confusion and doubt hate clarity. When I’m clear about my vision and goals, I feel anchored. It reminds me that my life is made for something meaningful. Next steps come easy.

Recently, one of my MBA mentors invited me to focus on being open instead of clear. Set an intention and stay open to how that intention manifests itself rather than trying so very hard to figure out the next step. Let the next step come. Naturally. In its time, rather than yours.

BOOM!

Clarity may make it easy to see the next steps.
Being open may give us the patience required to see which step is best to take next.

Now… time to jump onto a plane and celebrate the Grand Opening Weekend of the lululemon athletica Chelsea showroom in London. The first showroom to open in Europe! Telling you I am excited is a huge understatement! WOOT!

A Credo For Making It Happen

I’d call Danielle LaPorte one of my favourite mentors… if she wasn’t already crowned Hot Momma in my books.

Her newest piece of literary art, THE FIRE STARTER SESSIONS, is set to burn a hole through your excuses and ignite that fire within you to make it happen.

My favourite part of her book trailer below is obviously her “you got this” at the end. For obvious reasons.

How Committed is Committed?

One of my goals is to present at TED global.
It’s a ten year goal. I saw that speaking at a TEDx event as a milestone between now and then that would act as a stepping stone to this ten year goal. Maybe even a video on TED.com before hitting the stage.

TED recently announced the audition process for TED 2013. One caveat was that applicants would not be accepted if they already had a video on TED.com. They considered those ideas “found” and are instead looking for the undiscovered talent to feature on the TED 2013 stage. This means that if I did a wicked TEDx talk, and, as a result, got featured on TED.com, my ten year goal would not necessarily be achieved.

Part of me says “A talk at a TEDx event would be nice. Saying yes to that opportunity opens up the possibility of being featured on TED.com! You should be grateful for that opportunity Matt.”

Another part of me says “How committed to your ten year goal are you really? Saying no to a TEDx event means saying yes to TED global. Why hold yourself back? Play big Matt.”

Life gives us lots of opportunities and alternatives. These can tempt, divert, and challenge our commitment to living that rad, big, full, and divinely expressed life we can only imagine right now. Before taking the next “second-best option,” re-check in with yourself.

“Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.” – Marianne Williamson

PS. I know a lot of readers have TED-related goals.
If this is your year to make it happen – do it!

Open a Door by Dropping the “Or”

While gallivanting through the Nordics, I’ve been considering the power of the small words we use. You already know how I feel about the word “but.” This week, I’ve been specifically considering what happens when we use “and” instead of the word “or.”

How does “and” change our lives? How does it shift the way we communicate …

… the roles we play on a day-to-day basis: “I’m a senior executive and a really great parent.”
… our abilities and talents: “I’m creative and love working with numbers.”
… how we use our time: “I study full-time and travel the world.”
… or even ourselves: “I am gay and believe in God.”

We’ve been taught to use “or,” to specialize, to not do (or be) too much. When we replace the view of scarcity (one or the other) with a view of abundance (we can do, have, and be all we choose to), it opens up new possibilities.

Like Lindsey Stirling, the artist that said I will be a hip hop dancer, and a violinist, and a Mormon, and perform cool mash-ups at bars.

What new possibility could be created in your life if you exchanged “or” for “and”?

If We Want Different Results

… we need to do things differently.

Say “I love you” first.
Show up to every class.
Delete all online profiles.
Buy only from stores that are within walking distance from home.
Pleasure read before bed.
Don’t exercise.
Make the first move.
Ask the boss for a decrease in pay.
Do it the night before.
Move to a new home.
Buy flowers.
Leave a voicemail instead of an e-mail.
Buy a car.
Travel with no carry-on.
Attend another religion’s service.
Play boardgames together.
Don’t set goals.
Eat kale and chocolate with every meal.
Do it without asking for permission.
Ask for the job instead of for more information.

“Doing things differently” is easy to say. When I re-read this list of different options, however, some make me cringe. The thought “I could never do that!” comes bubbling up in my gut. Then I consider that maybe that feeling is merely pointing me to the perfect area of my life that I have become too attached to that may need a different result and, therefore, a different approach.

(In other news: it’s spring break here in Copenhagen – which means I am off for a little Scandinavian adventure with my flatmate to Stockholm and Helsinki. Living the dream = my life!)

Benjamin Zander on Possibility

For my Integral Coaching course I completed last week, we were asked to watch the below TED video before one of the sessions. I love it when TED videos are packed with truth bombs, and this one is no exception:

It’s one of the characteristics of a leader: that he not doubt for one moment the capacity of the people he’s leading to realize what he’s dreaming.

My job was to awaken possibility in others.

I will never say anything that couldn’t stand as the last thing I will ever say.
