As a new class heads off to school today, I am reminded of all the good memories I have of UBC. The beginnings, the endings, and everything in between. It is these memories that remind me of how great my experience was there.

Today, take some time to stop and appreciate a moment. Be it a beginning, an ending, or a something in between. Each moment is unique and will help remind you of how great your life is here….

This post has been long overdue! It has been waiting in drafts for me for far too long.

I need to share with you these artists: Neu and Two Lions & A Lady.

Neu has been a great addition to my spin class playlists as his beats are deep and melodic. They get me smiling on the bike while my quads are screaming. Plus, who else releases a movie trailer to show-off their new album tunes?!? Rad? Rad! Take a look for yourself:

Neu, Wes, and Lydia also joined forces to create Two Lions & A Lady. They performed live at the Coppertank a couple weeks ago and added so much to the vibe of the night. More on them to come, so keep your eyes peeled for greatness. In the meantime, enjoy their rendition of MGMT’s Kids (with an accordion!):

For the season’s finale of So You Think You Can Dance, the judges select their favourite dances from the season to be performed one more time. It is amazing to revisit how far the dancers have come and be reminded of how incredibly talented they all are.

The most memorable dance of the season was the hip hop dance between Alex Wong (a ballet dancer) and tWitch (an all-star hip hop dancer). Twitch teaches Alex how to push ballet “outta his mind” as they light up the stage in a NAPPYTAPS routine. Check out the video if you need a reminder of how great it was.

But, the week after this epic dance was performed, Alex injured himself and was sent into surgery and off the show. Devastating! The up-side? For the season’s finale, Ellen DeGeneres decided to step up and take Alex’s place. I have never loved a season’s finale more! Take a look at the video below to have a great start to your day:

If you are looking to get into writing, acting, singing, or producing – you should probably watch this video. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is bringing a collaborative production company to the masses and calling it hitRECord. If this is how new movies, television programs, songs, and art will be made in the future … I can’t frickin wait! (Thanks SuperForest for the great find.)

To the 19-year-olds who can legally have a beer;
To the people who say “I’m sorry” when someone else steps on their toe;
To the store clerks with “monopoly money” in their register;

To the ones that say zed instead of zee;
To the parents who made sure their kids’ Halloween costumes could fit over their snowsuits;
To the international visitors who are now proud citizens;

To the companies that print their slogans in both English and French;
To the people who actually make cowboy hats, plaid flannel, and hip waders look good;
To the teachers who ensure u is found in words like favourite and honour;

To the man who marries the guy of his dreams;
To the outdoor adventurers who never get bored;
To the chefs that know how to wield an open flame – on their BBQ or camp fire;

To the kids who grew up with ice skates on their feet;
To the individuals with the ability to vote and worship freely;

Starting on a good foot

You train for races and giv’r as soon as that starting gun goes off.
You practice your lines and deliver an all-star performance when the spotlight turns on.
You study for your test and power through it when the clock starts.

This pattern of preparation and a good start is seen in many aspects of your life. So then why do you settle for a bad night sleep and a rushed morning to start your day?

Before that alarm goes off, rejuvenate your body with some well-deserved sleep. Give yourself enough time to eat breakfast, make a lunch (or grab the one you prepared the night before), and sing a few tunes in the shower. Work-outs or dance parties in the morning are always enjoyable as well. So is listening to uplifting music, like this little ditty:

Commit to starting your days on a good foot. Commit to making your day great. Here’s to today!

Lessons from my Dad: a true Corker

Growing up, my Dad called me Cork. Little Cork to be precise. And man did I hate it! I always thought: “I have a first name – use it!”

All of my friends, and even some colleagues, now call me Corker. (Porker also had a good run.)

My Dad used to raise my bike seat “so high” that my legs couldn’t touch the ground when I was sitting on the seat. I’d fall all the time and get frustrated that my bike wasn’t “put together properly.”

In a world of spin classes and bike trips around Hawaii, seat height never seems to be the thing I blame for the bumped knees or bruised ego.

My Dad would take us on “excursions” down unmarked paths or through “no trespassing” sites. (His argument for going into clearly marked restricted areas was that “the signs were only there for bad people” and we were, after all, “just visiting.”)

I now love a good adventure. From roadtrips and mountain hikes to sneaking backstage at concerts – I’m game. (Luckily for me, I have some great friends that “like rules” that keep this habit in check and me out of trouble.)

My Dad was a great example (and warning) of things to come. His methodology, while questionable at the time, worked. His lessons stuck. Some of the lessons and his subtle pep talks I don’t fully understand yet, but I’m confident that I will as I get older and enter new stages of my life.

Today, as we honour the fathers in our lives, I am reminded of the best part of my Dad. He prepared me for life before I knew what preparation I needed for it:

So, to all the fathers out there, hang on. As us kids grow, we’ll better understand the sacrifices you’ve made and the blessings you’ve given to us. And while we’ll never be able to truly express our gratitude for it, we’ll try. In three simple words.

I love you.
