Sometimes the best plan is no plan

Flashback to a week ago – Wednesday before the long weekend – when my roommate calls me and says “Want to drive down to California this weekend?”

“… ummm…  aahh…. SURE!”

In a matter of hours, friends were enlisted, hotels were booked and a car was rented (Boomer is a little small for 4 people to be in for 4 days). We knew our final destinations, but had no maps, no confirmed stops (minus a good outlet mall), and, really, no plan but to have a good time.

And MAN was it amazing! Every correct exit felt like a million bucks. Every restaurant/food stop we ate at felt like we had found a diamond in the ruff (especially the Pelican Pub & Brewery and the Brunch Box). The one hotel we actually had a local area Google map for was the ONE hotel that we got SO lost trying to find. It was a sign that we were just meant to fly by the seat of our pants on this trip instead of calculating every move.

For someone who loves a plan (and maps!), this incredible road trip reminded me of the serenity that can be found by just letting go and doing it. Trusting your gut. Remembering the joy in taking your hands off the steering wheel and having a little dance party in the car instead.

A pretty rad crew in the car doesn’t hurt either. Who am I kidding! These folks are who made the trip!

Have you let go of the steering wheel lately?
