Beating the odds

The plan for the day was to catch a ferry to one side of Lamma Island, hike across the island, and then catch the ferry home that left from the other side.

A beautiful hike with amazing views later, we arrived at our destination just in time to watch our ferry pull away from the dock. (This may have been a result of us trekking about 20 minutes past the terminal before we realized we should probably turn around. Whoops!)

The next ferry from that terminal departed 2 hours later. Not gonna fly! So we decided to hike back to catch a ferry from where we were initially dropped off. On our way across, the trek took us just under 2 hours (including all picturesque stops, etc). The directional signs and maps said it would take us about 90 minutes to get back. The other ferry, however, left in 45 minutes.

So we dashed back up the mountains, jogged down the valleys, ran across the sandy beach and through the cobblestone alleyways to make it to the ferry JUST as they were about to lift the boarding ramp!

It just goes to show you that people (and maps) may tell you things are not possible, but you’ll never know whether they are until you try. You may even surprise yourself every now and then with what you can do when you set your mind (and feet) to something.
