My Version of Math

Twas the night before my first day and all through the pad,
Was a calmness amongst the excitement, which really made me glad.

… My first day as the Alumni Relations Manager for the Faculty of Science at UBC is officially tomorrow! (Woot!) Having just got my sweat on at Bikrams, I am all “namaste” as I write this – which is quite nice. It helps me focus on forming complete sentences instead of jumping around and adding in unnecessary exclamation marks just because I am THAT excited about the week ahead.

This weekend, I was sitting at a table at Browns with some fun friends when I admitted that I was a huge math geek in high school. Heyo Math Award! <pushes up glasses> One friend laughed and said “I wonder what the Faculty of Science would have done to you as a student.” The passing comment made me then think about what my version of a math degree would have looked like.

I think it would have looked a lot like Craig Damrauer’s new math….

… and sounded a lot like Bo Burnham‘s song (warning: inappropriate, but hilarious, lyrics) in the video below:

I’m not sure that would have made me the most successful student, but hopefully this perspective is helpful as a staff member. It’s time to add a little Corker huztpah into Science! Wish me luck folks!

Pick of the post: Michael Buble – Haven’t Met You Yet (music video)
