We continually hear “I don’t know what everyone does in the office” or “I didn’t know that opportunity was even available to get involved in.” We then spend hours determining marketing strategies and internal communication plans that will help “inform” parties about what we do or what is available to do. But do they really understand (or care)?
Instead of just focusing on promotions, I advocate for the creation of unifying projects that bring people together. With a larger purpose than just “getting to know each other,” teams dive deeper into their work and see the natural connections between what they do and what others do. Or, a unifying project could just facilitate the connections you need to increase moral, pride, and commitment to that larger purpose.
Ditch the “forced social” and create causes that help your people work (and have fun) together. That is what will truly unify your segregated units.
