As a new school year starts tomorrow, UBC Vancouver is getting ready to welcome over 7,400 new students and even more returning students on the new and improved Imagine Day. I wish I had something like this when I was a student to compliment the greatness that was Sauder’s Frosh. The value of a good orientation (both in school and in work) is repeatedly underestimated, but it is crucial for setting up individuals for success! To show everyone’s commitment to welcoming back students, the Orientations Team put this video together:
The AMS also put together a nice little video to encourage students to get involved. Hat tip to them:
Along with all the efforts going on for orientations, UBC’s Public Affairs has pulled together a team that has been madly working over this past year at a new UBC brand. It’s launch date is set for tomorrow, but the new main site and promo material are already out – so I thought I’d share the goods! I’m sure I will have more comments about the new brand and its roll-out after it is officially launched, but we’ll hold off on that for another day. In the meantime, check out the new UBC wesbite, add your voice to the micro-site A Place Of Mind, and watch this awesome video:
As an alumnus, I am actually proud to see that UBC is finally boasting about what it is: a world-class institution. I also think its pretty bold to showcase UBC’s relationship with the Downtown Eastside so prominently. (The Learning Exchange, academic projects like Studio 801, and countless student-run events and programs that raise money, advocate for, or assist in the DTES rarely get the attention they deserve. Again – another blog post in itself.) But kudos to the team that has worked on this.
My initial reaction to all the new videos and branding is “Wow – better than what I was expecting.” I’m happy to associate myself with these people and this brand.
Welcome back everyone. It’s gonna be a great year!

Hey Matt, thought you may wanna know that the Place of Mind video link on this page is not quite working… when I clicked play, it told me that “it’s a private video”. Just FYI.
