Last week I attended a session where the facilitator ended it off by giving gratitude to those that deserved it… with a twist.
She thanked the person who paid her to be there to lead the workshop.
She thanked those of us who attended her session for participating, etc.
Those I would say are the “classic thank yous” any speaker should do.
But then she went on to thank those who helped make today possible.
The woman who served the food. The people responsible for the upkeep of the building.
Her mentors for providing her with the confidence and the knowledge to speak.
Her pilot for the safe flight into Vancouver.
…. and it went on. For 10 minutes.
Some may think this is excessive, but I found it totally refreshing! We often say thank you to those that had an immediate impact on our success (or bottom line), but seem to miss those whose kind words, pats on the shoulder, or genuine benevolence leave a lasting impression.
When’s the last time you publicly thanked your awesome nextdoor neighbour, your encouraging middle school teacher, or that guy downstairs that always waves to you on your way to work? They may not make you millions, but they certainly make your day.
