You + Me = No Deal

After re-reading some of Stephen Covey’s book for this blog post, I was reminded that we have the option in life to say “No Deal.” Like when the product or event is too expensive, when the interviewee doesn’t fit with the company culture, or when you are determining whether the person who just asked you out would be “right for you.”

While the “No Deal” option of communications isn’t the best to way to go in sustaining a partnership or relationship, it is useful when determining whether or not to begin one. I like to call my “No Deal” factors my “non-negotiables” in this case. Consider them the initial checklist to see if the product, service, or person meets my needs (or wants).

When looking for a product or service, do your non-negotiables include its cost or price? What about its environmental impact? Colour? Taste? Size? Speed? Popularity?

When looking for a partner, do your non-negotiables include whether they lead an active and healthy lifestyle? Their income? Family? Profession? Values? Location? Intelligence?

Identifying your top 3 non-negotiables cuts the bottom of the barrel right away and leaves you with nothing but potential candidates!
