This weekend I was told that in order to be successful I should do the following four simple things:
- Aim lower
- Think smaller
- Give up, and just
- Go have a cup of coffee
Truth be told, I couldn’t agree more!

… Maybe I should explain myself:
We need to aim lower – at those who are younger than us. We need to start involving our youth more as they will be the ones who hold the next leadership positions and who make up our future pipeline. We also need to be mindful of how our actions today will affect the lives of those who follow us. What lessons are you passing on?
We need to think smaller – and downsize our life and our messaging. Much of what we have and say is excessive. If we make it easy for our message to be understood, and spread, we can equip more people with the “right tools.” This is also helpful when defining our own purpose. Finish this sentence with one word: I want to be ____. Now that’s simplicity!
We need to give up – our information, our need to control, our pride. We need to take our desire to share beyond simply sharing our favourite blog posts and pictures, and share the resources that have helped us be successful with those that need them most. If we are all playing in the same sandbox, be the one to share your shovel.
And we need to go have a cup of coffee – because it is in those intimate conversations (that we usually have over a cup of coffee with someone else) that we build our strongest relationships. I hate networking because it doesn’t build relationships, it builds your stack of business cards. Give me great dialogue on a patio or over dessert any day!
Maybe the 4 things should really be:
- Engage those younger than you
- Simplify your life
- Share, and
- Focus on building relationships with those around you
Better?

Hey Matt,
Wonderful post – I just had a piece of advice to ask about the share part. What amount of private information do you think is safe to share? I kind of just followed you lead with my blog and posted my email and number but I’ve had a few friends tell me about other people who’ve suffered from identity theft and other issues like that. I guess how do I find a reasonable balance between being accessible enough to help others and safe?
Thanks!
