Music – one of the best connectors

Music has an incredible (and timeless) ability to bring people together. It does this in many ways, but three are really resonating with me this morning. Maybe it’s because I finally got to hit the dancefloor last night with some friends, or because I am seriously addicted to finding great new tunes on iTunes or YouTube. Either way – here are my thoughts:

1) Music creates a common dialect that people can share despite what language the lyrics are sung in. I experienced this in Mendoza, Argentina and Copenhagen, Denmark when I attended some concerts by local artists. I had no clue what they were singing about (my Spanish and Danish were sub-par to say the least), but MAN were those concerts enjoyable experiences. I found myself humming some of the tunes as I walked home to the beat in my head. This is also applicable to music of different genres. Remixes, covers, duets, match-ups – they all bring together multiple voices to perform a single song. Like this one – all the bests of 2008:

2) Music motivates individuals to become a part of something or to take an opportunity that they previously thought wasn’t for them. This can range from roadtripping with your friends to Denver to see a concert (Canadian’s were definitely not the target audience there), to inspiring a nation that change is possible with new leadership. It speaks to the little guy, the outsider, and the one in the corner.

3) Music connects people around the world who had no previous connection. As artists travel the globe, more people begin to know and sing their songs, which creates a common connection to some degree. But now, with the help of technology, musicians from every corner of the world are coming together to perform in unison. This is what truly inspires me! Benevolence meets the music industry:

An interesting thing about the last point is this new project. A masterpiece in 2009 will not be created by one performer or one nation, but as a collaborative effort from many talented individuals from around the world.

Auditioning online, practicing globally, and then coming together to perform as one. HOLY WOW am I excited to see how this project turns out!! I wonder if you can get tickets to this…
