The Highlights of 2008
Three years ago today, when I kept a different (and now dead) blog, I did a post highlighting the best parts of 2005. Not only was this a chance to reflect on the great year gone by, but an opportunity to remember what was truly important in my life. In this blog I try and refrain from posts like these, but wanted to blog about this so that maybe it would make you think about the great things that happened in your life in the past year. We will soon return to the “regular program” but, in the spirit of the last day of 2008, I give you its highlights Corker-style!
January:
- Sitting down to talk with Nestor Korchinsky to prep for my first solo SLC workshop on “Leaving a Lasting Impression.” That man is a ball of energy and truly inspirational!
- Winning “School of the Year” with the Sauder School of Business team at JDC West 2008 in Lethbridge (and being inducted to the JDC West Soche Family)
February:
- Helping the boys of Mr. Vanier 2008 learn some new dance moves (and doin’ it again for 09!)
- Heading to Ontario with the UBC Recruitment team to give a “day in the life” presentation to future UBC-bound Ontarians
- Driving to the interior of BC with Avery and Haas – just cause we could!

March:
- Organizing the “Barn Burner” fundraiser for Matt Hill and Steph Tait from Run For One Planet – they are in New Orleans for NYEve and home in 18 weeks!
- Getting laughed at by the lady who was registering me onsite at the GLOBE conference. Yep, she actually laughed out loud and asked me “is that really your last name?” She then brought over a colleague to show her how “hilarious” this was. … …
April:
- Not writing any exams! My last term of school and no finals! None. Zero! It was heavenly!
- Celebrating the final days of school with friends at REC Formal and Sauder Formal (and the limo rides beforehand)
- Skydiving with Avery
- Getting a full-time job (which I now love) and a new apartment (which is also pretty awesome) in the span of an hour. A nice reminder of how fast your world can change!
May:
- Speaking at the Chan Centre as Sauder’s valedictorian
- Celebrating graduation with family and friends at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts
- Singing “I’m Yours” at the Coppertank with Brent Tyler (and the rest of the gang)
June:
- Playing the game “over under” at CCAE‘s national conference and watching my colleague fall down. If there is one thing that’s hilarious, it’s people falling down. Sad, but so true. Watch for yourself!
- Visiting my friend Wes in New York City – it’s always a pleasure talking about life with him
July:
- Being race support for my sister, with my bro-in-law Doug, as she ran her first ultra-marathon (the North Shore Knee Knacker)
- Running around Vancouver in my underwear with Livia and Ange as part of the Underwear Affair
- Driving down to Denver, Colorado to see Jason Mraz at the Mile High Music Festival with Ange, Zoe, and Adam (check out the video below – yep, that’s us at the beginning, front row!)
August:
- Watching the first go. Dan Henderson got married – the first of my high school friends to tie the knot. It was awesome to be there for it – congrats again!
- Camping in a backyard on my birthday and the tomfoolery that went along with it (insert the Cullens’ pirate-thug accent here)
September:
- Judging commerce frosh weekend as a Spirit Judge with my partner-in-commerce-crime Kimmie Bebluk (such an honour!)
- Attending UBC’s Homecoming and heading to The Shack afterward with some great people
October:
- Biking around Hawaii with my Dad
- Hosting the first Young Alumni event – The Next Step: Your Personal Brand – with Sarah Bancroft. This was the start of something great!
November:
- Presenting at CCAE ProFusion about interst-based volunteering and at CareerTrack about networking for former/current high performance athletes
- Seeing Jason Mraz for a second time in one year – this time, thankfully, in Vancouver – with Adam, Zoe, Warren, and Glen! (Next show in Vegas in June – you in?)
- Enjoying some “Thunder the Influence” martinis with the great students that attended the UBC Alumni Achievement Awards
December:
- Helping Sherry Haddow put together some great drawings for the new Student Engagement Centre in Brock Hall
- Attending REC formal with Ange – yes, it made the list!
- Creating my lens for Seth Godin. I may not be heading to New York, but creating this was well timed, and well worth it!
- Starting new holiday traditions with my family and friends out here on the west coast – you know who you are, and thanks!
Wow – if you’ve made it this far – I’m impressed!
Final thoughts: After reading through this list, I realize my past year has been filled with great friends (and family), athletic endeavours, original events (and worthwhile traditions), travels, and lots of change.
The best part: I know that 2009 is not only going to be more of the aforementioned, but more of the unmentioned – and THAT’S the exciting part!
Happy New Years everyone – the best is yet to come!
